Shinji Kawabata, MD, PhD
Associate professor, Department of Neurosurgery, Osaka Medical College, Osaka, Japan
Dr. Kawabata was engaged in a number of research projects relating to his major interest, Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT). This leads to research and review articles, which have been cited in many papers. Dr. Kawabata has had a highly productive research career with over 80 publications. He and his colleagues have had the most clinical experience of any group in the world in treating patients with either high grade gliomas or aggressive, recurrent high-grade meningiomas by means of BNCT.
Dr. Kawabata is both an outstanding basic researcher and a clinical neurosurgeon, treating patients with very aggressive brain tumors, high grade gliomas, high-grade meningomas, metastatic lesions, and malignant lymphomas, using multi-modality treatment including radiation and/or chemotherapy. His clinical team have brought BNCT to a new level with their use of an accelerator neutron source and the initiation of a multi-institutional clinical trial to evaluate BNCT. Their preliminary clinical results are the best ever obtained by any group using BNCT to treat patients with high grade gliomas and hopefully will significantly advance BNCT as a cancer treatment modality.
In summary, Dr. Kawabata is familiar with radiation therapy for brain tumors, and is a talented, highly dedicated neurosurgeon and clinical scientist who has made very important contributions in advancing BNCT for the treatment of brain tumors.
